An unboxing/unwrapping and game feature video, all-in-one!

Unless you’re a true hardcore fan with a bit of coin or credit to spare, you probably won’t go as far as ordering gaming magazines from Japan to sate your need for game information. I’ve done it several times, but in the end ordering expensive reading material you can’t really read which only has about two to four pages worth of visuals you actually care about is costly and sadly very unsatisfying. Which is why it is great when someone like TeKKenXer shares his brand-spankin’ new issue of Arcadia Magazine to the rest of us through Youtube.

The 12+ minute vid shows off what Tekken fans get with this month’s issue- the magazine’s feature on Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and a nifty Move List book that comes in at about 81 pages and will probably give a nice edge for players waiting for the game to hit their arcades. Also, the vid is clear enough that if you can actually read Japanese, you’ll get a lot more from it that all the rest of us.

September 14 is on the horizon! For now, check out the vid and give this man props by liking his vid.

SSFIV’s ‘Mazing Mods: Chun-li’s SF2 Animated Movie Custom Skin!

Posted in Extra Costumes, Fan Service, Fighting Games, Game-related Events, Gaming, PC Gaming, Streetfighter, Videogame Artworks on August 31st, 2011 by thelonegamer

Back in the mid-90′s, even before the lovable lunacy that was the Van Damme Streetfighter movie, the real and totally legit cinematic World Warrior flick was the Japanese-made Streetfighter II: The Animated Movie. It was awesome for many reasons- the animation was of exceptional quality, the fight scenes were hard-hitting and awesomely directed, and it showed for the first time a truly dark, evil and powerful M.Bison.

But of course, the most awesome action in the original SF2 movie wasn’t the Double Shotokan vs Psycho Power Finale Battle… it was the vicious but sexy apartment fight between Chun-li and Vega. That scene, in which the half-dressed Chunster is ambushed fresh out of the shower by the Spanish Ninja, is pure fan service, punctuated by copious shots of the heroine’s panties with every high kick and tumble. Man, those were the days of sexy anime. For those who haven’t seen it, you can check out this animated battle of the sexes in the vid below.

Still crazy-awesome after all these years.

Suffice to say that ever since, there’s always been a little whisper at the back of my head wishing that Capcom would make Chun-li’s look in the anime as an in-game outfit. Of course, that would never happen formally, as it probably won’t do these days for the Flagship Femme of Capcom’s leading franchise to traipse around in her undies. Well, the key word is ‘formally’. Thanks to the creative artists and modders who’ve been tinkering with SSFIV for the PC, the ultimate guilty-pleasure Chun-li custom costume (well, the one we can show in public) is now available for gamers to recreate the sexy battle in actual gameplay!

The classic anime fight, in game form!

On an extra note, I noticed that Chun-li’s finishing move in the movie- a lighting leg barrage that ends with a final kick with both feet- is incredibly similar to her Hosenka Ultra in SSFIV… coincidence? Or did the game devs take a cue from the anime flick?

The Chun-li SF2 mod comes in both clean and ‘wounded’ versions. Cool!

Created by modder Sloth86, the custom SF2 anime skin for Chun-li (which, like all mods, is free to find and download online) comes in 10 variants, including alternate colors for her nightshirt, clean and ‘wounded’ versions, and a couple sans the shirt (just her bra and panties). It’s quite a wonderful piece of fan service and I salute these artsy mods for their fine work. Capcom should hire these guys and replace those hacks who take months to produce color swap ‘alternate costumes’ in MVC3…

Now, if only I had a freakin’ PC to use these darn custom skins… sigh.

Soul Calibur V Demo Impressions from Kayane

France-based fighting game fan Kayane was lucky enough to get lots of hands-on time with the playable demo of Soul Calibur V, and she’s nicely posted a lengthy and detailed article with all her thoughts on the upcoming Slash ‘Em Up. There’s stuff on individual characters and quite a bit on the game system and details I really appreciated, so kudos to Kayane for the lovely report. Of course, things may change from the demo to later versions of the game to the final build, but it’s very much worth reading for anyone interested in the game. Darn, 2012 can’t come soon enough. Go and ready Kayane’s SCV report for yourself over here.

Tekken Tag 2 Bana Passport Designs

Posted in Arcade, Fighting Games, Gaming, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on August 30th, 2011 by thelonegamer

Which one strikes your fancy?

When Tekken Tag Tournament 2 hits Japanese arcades on September 14, gamers are gonna want one of these babies- the Bana Passport will contain all your TTT2 data- names, battle records and customizations for all 44 characters. If and when it arrives here locally with the game, I’m pretty sure it will cost a fair bit of cash, but that should be no problem. I’m hoping we get these cool designs. The Mishima montage is nice but I’m liking either the Jin Fist or the SD Girls cards better.

Just a little bit more of waiting and TTT2 arcade videos should be popping up soon enough. It’ll be like Tekken 6′s launch all over again- mad crowds in the arcades, long lines and staying till the arcades close… man, good times. More as we get it then!

Tekken Tag 2 Tweet Update: King Customizations

Posted in Arcade, Fan Service, Fighting Games, Game Advertising, Game-related Events, Gaming, Tekken, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on August 30th, 2011 by thelonegamer

Nothing is quite as intimidating as a Mosquito Lamp on one’s head.

Just a micro-update to start the week, as Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada posts what appears to be a pic of some of King’s head item customizations in Tekken Tag Tournament 2. The first on the left seems to be the King mask without the hair tufts on the bottom edge (more mask-like mask?), the second are Ogre Horns (rad) and the one on the right afaik is a Japanese Mosquito Repellent holder/lamp. Perhaps King is paranoid of any Dengue epidemics (topical here locally, sadly)? It certainly looks… interesting. Surely these are just a fraction of the items and customizations that will be available in the game, which looks to release in Japanese arcades perhaps in a few weeks. Hopefully we’ll see these weird items as well as more sensible or cool outfits adorning the characters very soon as players start accumulating that fight money. More as we get it then!

UPDATE:The date for Japanese release of TTT2 in arcades is September 14. Other territories may see the game starting in late September onwards. For original article check here.

Namco-Bandai X Tecmo-Koei Crossover Game?

Posted in Game Advertising, Game-related Events, Gaming on August 29th, 2011 by thelonegamer

Um… oh-kay…

This countdown page suddenly popped up online. Crossovers and mash-ups seem to be all the rage these days. Well, Namco is all about Tekken or Soul Calibur, while Tecmo’s biggest thing is DOA. Tekken X Dead or Alive? Or perhaps something else? Will this even be a fighter? Well, the games from both companies that I care about are fighters, so if it’s based on other genres in their stables, I won’t be too excited. But I have to say, I am intrigued. We’ll find out in about 7 days then…

VF5 Final Showdown Pax 2011 Gameplay Stream, Q&A

Posted in Arcade, DLC, Extra Costumes, Fan Service, Fighting Games, Game Advertising, Game-related Events, Gaming, PS3 on August 28th, 2011 by thelonegamer

IPlayWinner has put up a video stream of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown gameplay from the arcade units brought by Sega to PAX 2011, so you can check out almost 2 hours of play. Unfortunately, the footage doesn’t have characters decked out with the more wacky customizations of FS, so it may just look like the regular VF5 for most. But if you follow VF or know about the game, you’ll easily see the many new gameplay and animation tweaks that set this latest version apart from earlier VF5 versions/upgrades. The best part will probably be a Q&A portion with Patrick Riley, Sega’s Director for International Product Development, but predictably he can’t really answer much since the game (console version) is still being developed/put together, so specific stuff like Available Modes, In-game Content, Marketing Activities and other details will have to wait till later- hey, it’s still about a year away.

So check out the stream here. Gonna wait for this game as long as it takes. VF5FS is freakin’ awesome… and it will be mine.

The MKast: Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection

Ed Boon and friends wax nostalgic.

The latest episode of the Mortal Kombat-centric MKast brings us Ed Boon and some old friends reliving the memories of the glory days in the arcade for the bloody beat ‘em up franchise. It’s all quite a nice bit of walking down memory lane, particularly for us gamers old enough to really have experienced those times of quarter/token filching and taking turns battling or watching in the smoky arcades.

Of course, this is all just to tell gamers that Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection is coming at the end of the month for PSN, PC and XBLA, for the reasonable price of $9.99 or 800 MS Points. The games will be coming in their original looks, rather than the HD remastery that has been the case for Capcom’s rehashes- apparently HD and the original games’ frame rates do not mix. Oh well… the clearer and more hi-res the old MK’s are, all the easier to see the tacky outfits, I guess… heheh. Anyways, I won’t be picking up MK Collection, just as I didn’t pick up the also-out 3rd Strike re-release… I prefer to live in the NOW, not in the past. I’ll be fine with the new Mortal Kombat and SSFIV, thanks. Anyway, nice vid in any case.

VF5 Final Showdown @ PAX 2011

Youtube user Megazone23 just posted a bunch of gameplay vids of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown at the currently ongoing Pax 2011. Unless you’re in the know about FS’s changes though, it probably will just look like your usual VF5 since there aren’t any customizations or special bits shown in the vids, aside from actual gameplay animation tweaks.

The players aren’t familiar with VF5FS’s new system, so they don’t take full advantage of the new stuns and prolonged combos more usual in Japanese arcade matches. Still, it’s nice to see FINALLY this revision being played outside Japan. It’s a pain, but we have to suffer about a year of waiting still to get our home versions of this fighting extravaganza. It will be worth the wait, if it arrives in arcade-perfect form, as promised. For now, check out the vids.

Tekken Updates: Tekken 3D Prime Edition Webpage Up, TTT2 Boss Reveal Coming?

Posted in 3DS, Arcade, Fan Service, Fighting Games, Game Advertising, Game-related Events, Gaming, Tekken, Tekken 3D Prime Edition, Tekken Blood Vengeance, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on August 25th, 2011 by thelonegamer

The Tekken gang’s coming to the 3DS, in case you didn’t know.

Tekken Official has just added a new page for the latest upcoming Tekken, Tekken 3D Prime Edition. There’s nothing much there yet save a nifty montage of character art from Tekken 6 and still a big ad for the Tekken Blood Vengeance movie pack-in. Famitsu just posted an article for the game with some character bios for the fighters appearing in their featured screenshots. The thing about Tekken 3D- depending on the individual screen shot, it can either look quite impressive and slick, or very pixelly and iffy. Still, Tekken has always been about beauty in motion, not in stills…

On another topic, there’s a little bit of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 talk on arcade site ariesu, which has this intriguing translated text which seems to refer to TTT2′s end boss.

Famitsu arcade game channel is “Tekken Tag Tournament 2″ is the follow-up. Introducing the boss appearing in single play.
1 boss Mishima parents. Ogre is to appear next. Additionally the emergence of the next semi-Kazama. The aura of mystery and black from the feet of her slump to defeat Kazama …?

UPDATED: Though initially I thought that ’1 boss Mishima parents’ was the Final Boss, this may instead refer to a Mishima Parent-and-Child Tag Team… which may be one of three possibilities- Jinpachi and Heihachi, Heihachi and Kazuya or Kazuya and Jin. Afterwards, Ogre is faced, then Jun Kazama- which is odd to me; will you face them separately, not as a team? Finally, after Jun is defeated, some sort of black mist or energy appears at her feet(?) while she’s sprawled on the ground… perhaps heralding the appearance of the actual Final Boss. I GOT IT! THOSE FREAKIN’ WEIRD SHOES OF HERS ARE THE BOSS…!

From Harada’s Twitter we can confirm that Jun herself is NOT the End Boss (known this for some time actually), and that the boss will ‘look like human’ (Harada’s exact words). No beam attacks though, so it won’t be something like Devil Kaz or Devil Jin. Who or what will it be? As of now, I have no freakin’ idea, but this is really intriguing. It shouldn’t be too long before we find out though, given the impending release of the game in Japanese arcades next month. More as we get it then!
