Musing about: Dragon Age Inquisition

IGN’s Stage Demo.

Even as I am totally obsessed with Skyrim today, I am of course looking forward to the next big RPG and perhaps the first big Next-Gen RPG in many a gamer’s sights- and that’s Bioware’s Dragon Age Inquisition.

I was able to play Dragon Age Origins a few years ago on Xbox360 (I have the game as well on PS3 today), and thoroughly enjoyed it for the likable cast of companions, the involving story and the cool gameplay. I did however find quite lacking in customization. It still ranks among my all-time favorite RPGs, and I even bought most of the DLC expansions that came after release. I remember that I didn’t play through the game with every character option, mainly only playing as the Human Noble.

As for Dragon Age 2, I played it a bit, but my interest in it tapered off soon after I realized that the lovable cast of DAO would only appear in negligible cameos. The story at the time failed to engage me, and I just drifted away from it.

But then, here comes DAI; which frankly looks SPECTACULAR. While I haven’t seen all of DA’s media, I am very invested in the world, and I love the characters and the way that this latest chapter still involves aspects of the previous games, and puts your hero and allies in a headlong clash against or alongside many of the world’s powerful factions is irresistible.

I am loving that you are in command of building a powerful, world-changing organization, and will be given the choice of assembling the various heroes and characters that make it up. Being able to affect the world, making decisions and choices that matter, is awesome.

I do recognize that unlike Skyrim (sadly, comparisons are inescapable for me), this isn’t a world where you create your own story; DAI isn’t a sandbox where you make up your own saga, it’s a set playground with set rules where you battle to the top. In that, it’s a totally different beast but that is actually what I am looking forward to.

I am quite intrigued at the incredibly varied locales and environments, the vast spaces to explore, the countries you will enter and deal with as the story progresses. I am hoping the quest is long and very involved, with many options and branches that will allow for long stretches. I do not expect to ‘power through’ this game; I want to build up my Inquisition and see my forces grow and battle enemies who are worthy of such a formidable force.

I am intending to get the PS4 version- this may be the game that makes me get a Next-Gen Sony Box. I think it may be a bit too much trouble to put together a monster PC for it (and too pricey), and unlike Skyrim I don’t think this is a game given to extensive modding (I may be wrong) like Skyrim was.

Anyway, I am really wanting to digest every bit of info on this game as we crawl excruciatingly to the October release. Damn, it’s going to be a hard, long wait.

Mortal Kombat X E3 Stage Demo, New Characters!

Mortal Kombat shows off some of the goods to come.

Ed Boon showed off his latest baby on stage at E3, revealing a ton of tidbits for this spectacular-looking gorefest. Mortal Kombat X will feature a bunch of all-new characters, some of which made their debut on the previously-seen trailer. The so-far shown newcomers include D’Vorah (‘Ladybug’), a half-human/half-insect female combatant, Ferra and Torr are the Master-Blaster combo character and Kotal Khan is the male fighter shown squeezing blood into his face from a crushed heart (Eew).

But there’s MORE! The vid above also gives a first look (character portrait only) at Cassie Cage- yep, the daughter of vets Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade (yep, they hook up some time after the previous tournament). Cassie will fight using a combination of both her parents’ styles.
Some other bits from the game- each character will have 3 Variations which will effectively be very different versions of the character, each with exclusive moves or weapons. This may pretty much triple the roster in a way- awesome.
The story of MKX is set up to 25 years after the first game (the story may happen in stages throughout that time lapse), allowing for both older and newer characters to appear. This still doesn’t answer whether we’ll see any of the fighters killed off in the last game though… Lastly, the game’s Final Boss will be a returning character, though it may be a ‘surprise’.

Man, Mortal Kombat X is looking darn intriguing and awesome. The graphics look amazing, the fighting looks solid, the character designs are wild, and I can’t wait to see more of this one. Sadly we still have to wait a while- the game is set for release in 2015 on pretty much every console. Color me excited. Hit me with your best shot, Nether Realm! I want your game now.

Cassie Cage makes her debut in this demo video.

UPDATE: Added in IGN’s Stage Demo vid from Day 2. This new vid shows off action with new characters Cassie Cage and Kotal Khan, along with their pretty cool new fatalities. I have to say I am loving the fatality/victory screen layout, with the victor standing in the background, the loser’s body in the fore. Really nice. They really are impressing me with this one.

Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN E3 Stage Demo

Frustrating watch for one of my most-wanted games coming this year.

Okay, the video above- Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN’s stage demo feature from Gamespot- is just yet another example of why Japanese fighting games are sadly hamstrung whenever they present on shows like this. The actual guy who knows everything (in this case GG’s creator/game dev Daisuke Ishiwatari) can’t speak a word of Japanese, so half of the time is wasted on him speaking in Japanese and for his translator (whom I think they just sourced externally since she also plainly knows NOTHING about what she’s trying to explain) to try and figure out how to relay his words to a reporter who ALSO knows nothing (I love Cam on the Skyrim Mod series but DAMN he’s out of place here). It’s sheer frustration. Harada of Tekken should really value his English-speaking colleague, Michael Murray.

They barely talk about the game, the story, the modes, any home-only features… they can’t even show more than the series’ two most common ly-seen characters when you have a whole roster of awesome and interesting fighters to show off. DAAAAMN. Such a wasted opportunity.

ANYWAY… Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN features awesome, awesome-looking 3D anime art and graphics, hardcore fighting action, a more expanded Story mode and will feature at least one new character exclusive to the console. It will be out on PS3 and PS4 this Holiday 2014. Can’t freakin’ wait.

Mortal Kombat X E3 2014 Trailer Reveal!

Vicious ang gory action with some (nasty) new faces in this trailer…

The latest and even more gory trailer for Mortal Kombat X has just debuted in E3, and boy, does it rock. Aside from the two ninja poster boys, there are two (or is that two-and-a-half?) new characters shown- a female with insect-like features apparently named ‘Ladybug’ and a two-in-one fighter ala Master Blaster from Beyond Thunderdome. The fighting is VICIOUS and pretty impactful, and I really like the feel of it. The new stuff like how the tandem character attacks look pretty cool, so I’d really like to see what else is in store. Looks like this new MK is going to go above and beyond just bringing back the oldies. Awesome.

Oh and damn those new X-rays and Fatalities are gruesome. Love it! Heheh.

The Lone Gamer’s Skyrim Let’s Play Gets a Trailer!

Now Showing at my Youtube Channel!

I was just fooling around last night with all the hours and hours of Elder Scrolls V Skyrim PC gameplay footage I’ve already prerecorded for my LP, and well- I hammered out a rough trailer. It’s mainly to have a teaser video on the Youtube channel for non-subscribers, but I think it’s also a bit of a thank you to all the watchers who make doing the series so satisfying.

Of course, Skyrim being so damn cinematic a game- anyone can just take a bunch of clips, set it to the game’s freakin’ godly music and it will probably look amazing. What more if I could actually mod or fool around with the Creation Kit? Sigh.

Anyways, the series is at 30 episodes and still going, with no end in sight. It’s a hobby. Heheh.

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Arcade: Female Tengu Reveal Trailer

What will Team Ninja think up next?

Hot on the heels of the images from the latest Famitsu magazine is a trailer for Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate showing off its latest upcoming challenger- none other than the Female Tengu (still not sure if this is her actual name though). Voiced by seiyuu Akemi Sato, this winged lady seems in all appearances to fight in the same way as the original Tengu did, with flying attacks and wind gusts blown by the fan she wields. So those who were clamoring for the return of DOA2′s end boss- he’s back, just with boobs. The trailer above shows off her gameplay along with several outfits.

Have to say my feelings are mixed. The design is very Japanese and- well, I guess a bit of an acquired taste. I never liked the Tengu character- hated it, actually. Just because its now easier on the eyes doesn’t change that much. Still, a new character is a new character, but then again- both this La Femme Tengu and Phase 4 (both expected to come to consoles in a late June update) are not really new- well, not totally new. Team Ninja is stretching the meaning of the word with these latest add-ons. Well, at least Marie-Rose IS really all-new. Sigh.

Anyway, check out the trailer. So DOA gets their own sexy supernatural vamp, eh? Heheh.

UPDATE: The Female Tengu is apparently named Nyotengu. Either that or Tengurl (Ew).

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: First Look at Female Tengu?

Posted in Arcade, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, DLC, Fan Service, Fantasy, Fighting Games, Game Advertising, Game-related Events, Gaming, PS3 on June 4th, 2014 by thelonegamer

Is this DOA5U’s mysterious Female Tengu?

I found the pic above posted by user LilStormCloud on the GameFAQs forums, and I think its legit. This may just be the first clear look at the mysterious new character being teased by Team Ninja. So she isn’t just a girl in a Tengu mask, but an actual supernatural being, literally a female version of DOA2′s late end boss.

Of course, ‘Female Tengu’ is probably not her actual name- well, at least I hope it isn’t. I also hope it isn’t ‘Tenga’, which I read somewhere online. Heh.

Also, this post from Gematsu says that Female Tengu, along with Kasumi clone Phase 4 will be added to the console versions of Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate in late June- this is as yet unconfirmed but would be awesome if true. I am thinking that we’ll find out more- and hopefully get a trailer or so- this coming E3.

Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN Headed for Consoles!

Guilty Gear Xrd’s Arcade Intro.

We’ve known it for some time, but at last, Arc System Works has revealed through the latest issue of Famitsu Magazine that the console versions of their awesome brawler Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN will be hitting PS3 and PS4 this Fall 2014. Even better, according to the article, the two PS versions will have cross-play functionality, allowing players of either console versions to face off in VS Play. The PS4 version will also have upgraded visuals, which will output at full 1080p HD. The PS3 version will be limited to 720p.

Other extras will include at least one totally new character for the console version and an extended Story Mode that will continue where the plot left off in the Arcade version.

This is darn awesome. I’ve been wanting/needing a good beat ‘em up to get me to buy a PS4, and this definitely counts as one. Hoping to see more of this game next week at E3!

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Arcade: Who is the Female Tengu?

Team Ninja shows more of this intriguing new fighter.

We posted earlier that Team Ninja has been teasing a probable new character for Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Arcade for the past week or so, posting pics of someone wearing a Tengu mask. Well, speculation that this new character is not the old DOA2 End Boss but a female have just been confirmed as TN has posted a couple of pics showing more of the character, in particular a very female-looking pair of lips, chin, jawline and, well, beauty mark. We know its a female- Who or what is she? Why is she wearing a Tengu mask? What fighting style will she use?

Hopefully more of this intriguing newcomer will be revealed soon, and I hope more on DOA will be shown off this coming E3. I say, DOA on Next-Gen systems already, Team Ninja! Come on!

Mortal Kombat X Revealed in New Trailer!

Can’t these two ever get along?

After some teasing on Twitter, Ed Boon and Netherrealm finally revealed their latest game- none other than Mortal Kombat X.
The debut trailer (above) is yet another confrontation between mortal foes Scorpion and Sub-Zero, with the fight showing off expected elements and ending quite, um, decisively. Well, what can I say? The scene didn’t particularly strike me as that impressive, nor did the graphics (it is speculated the whole thing was in real-time) or any of the gameplay elements. Also quite tired of the whole Sub-Zero and Scorpion thing. I was hoping for more of the continuation of the story that ended with quite a cliffhanger in the last game.

Anyway, we’ll get to see more of this upcoming game surely in next week’s E3. The game is set for a 2015 release on PS3, PS4, XBOne, 360 and PC.
