Fallout Shelter: Unleashing my Inner Overseer

Vault 13. My own personal Utopia.

Immediately after Bethesda’s magnificent day at E3, when Fallout 4 was announced and the world was cheering the impending arrival of Life After the Apocalypse, I was also excited… but it wasn’t for F4.

Nay, though I was a Bethesda fan, I’m more of an Elder Scrolls guy. I am mad for Skyrim and Oblivion, yet Fallout- well, let’s just say I love the idea, and I did install Fallout 3 on my PC last year- but I never really got into it. The world was just as detailed, so incredibly textured with tons of things to do, interactivity and multiple paths (blow up the city or not?)… arguably it was far better than Skyrim. But then again, the animations- the stiffness of the characters, the unwieldy combat (I still don’t know if it’s really a shooter or a turn-based thing with the VATs) kept me from getting invested. Perhaps Fallout 4, which they say is basically Skyrim with guns (hah) will finally succeed in roping me in (it probably will). But till then- FALLOUT SHELTER (iOS, coming to Android).

From the get-go, I loved the idea. You are an Overseer… the Boss. You’re in charge of the upkeep, the security and the survival of a Vault- which can be as small as a little network of rooms or as large as a virtual city of 200 souls. Your job is to plot the city out, build it, assign jobs to your people, and keep things in order. Sim Colony? Sim Ant Colony? Kinda like that. But its all done with Bethesda’s official Fallout Pip Boy cartoon art style which is incredibly endearing, and just makes it all look, sound and feel official. This isn’t just some knockoff mobile throwaway- this is a bonafide, first party product- this is about as Fallout as Fallout can get.

And it’s FREE. Well, there is the one very unnecessary bit of in-app purchase, where you are given the choice to purchase ‘Lunchboxes’ which contain cards that will give you anything from a few bottlecaps to a suit of Powered Armor (got one of those… SWEET). You earn Lunchboxes in the course of the game, by achieving goals, so its never really needed to actually buy them with real money.
Otherwise- the gameplay is all free and it’s all good. Though this may seem like a simple mobile game, its really not- and after a while you just have to appreciate the detail that goes into this game. Every single person in your care has a name, has stats. You assign them to rooms- from working on Power Plants or Water Purification Stations or just chilling in Living Quarters or taking stock in Storage Rooms. Rooms are run by power, people run on food and water, so you have to build the adequate number of rooms to supply these resources to you, and you have to manually tap a room to gather these resources- it may be a bit tedious but it is what you do (ah, the toils of an Overseer…) and keeps things running in more or less real-time.

Send out dwellers to explore, find stuff and get some sun.

As you go along and grow your Vault’s population, either by attracting newcomers from outside or having a baby born (by coupling a man and a woman together in a Living Space), you eventually open up more rooms with different functions- mostly to train your dwellers’ stats, and eventually to produce even more power/food/water. Along the way you’ll have to handle things like the occasional fire, rad-roach infestations (DAMN those things are dangerous) and the inevitable Raider Attack.
You’ll need to have your dwellers armed, and weapons can only be acquired from Lunch Boxes or by foraging outdoors- you can send out one of your dwellers to explore the outside world, and he or she will be able to find stuff like weapons and clothing (which gives stat bonuses). Having your people suited up and packing heat is the best way to keep your Vault secure and safe.

And well, with all that- it’s up to you. This game has proven to be maddeningly addictive, and ever since I installed this on my iPad, I’ve been constantly keeping tabs on my Personal Vault. At first times were hard, and my dwellers were demoralized, starving, parched and under-equipped.

Fast forward to today- I’ve got over a hundred dwellers in a veritable underground metropolis, all of them happy and armed to the teeth. Raiders regularly attack but they’re mincemeat to my militia (a single family of warriors I’ve trained myself). I have a nuclear reactor and a Nuka Cola plant newly built, and I’ve decide to tear down the original Old Vault in the upper reaches to make way for a more organized, aesthetic layout. It’s all bliss for my Obsessive-Compulsive Dictator side.

That all said, I can probably consider Fallout Shelter as a truly exceptional mobile game- it’s absolutely perfect for tablets like the iPad in terms of controls, interface, the large screen, and the ease of which you can just pull it out of your bag to quickly check on your Vault’s progress at anytime. It’s charming, compelling and wonderfully entertaining… well, depending mostly on how you like these sorts of games. If you love building, are a bit OC, and are more about watching and admiring than actively shooting or controlling a central main character- this should be something you may want to pick up. Heck, if you own an iPad, there’s no reason to NOT get this game.

I do hope that Bethesda continues to support this game with more content and updates- it’s certainly not without flaws and could do with a tweak or two. Maybe a Hardcore mode, where when a dweller dies, you cannot resurrect them (with caps)? I dunno. For now though, everything’s as blissful as can be. WHO NEEDS FALLOUT 4? Just kidding.

UPDATED! Jack-O: Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator’s New Character!

Posted in Arcade, DLC, Fan Service, Fighting Games, Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator, Guilty Gear Xrd Sign on June 4th, 2015 by thelonegamer

A Halloween-themed New Challenger?

The all-new character to be added to the upcoming Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator has been revealed. Jack-O, a mysterious female fighter sporting a sleek outfit accentuated by an apparently sentient ball-and-chain as well as a mask, joins the oddball cast of Xrd with the arcade upgrade. She is apparently another associate or ally of ‘That Man’, in the same vein as I-No and Raven.

Jack-O Location Test Footage.

From what I can tell, Jack-O may be short for ‘Jack-O-Lantern’ given the look of her mask and the ball-and-chain attached to her ankle (which may or may not be a familiar, like Ramlethal’s Lucifero). Her attacks are described as ‘comical’, and she looks quite interesting.

Jack-O’s Intro: Cute and creepy?

There has been speculation that there may be room for one more character to be added on the Character Select screen- in Xrd’s case, the more the merrier! I am really hoping this to make the jump to consoles eventually, but for now I’ll settle for checking out vids once the Location Tests start shortly.

Jack-O’s Win Animation. Dat ass.

Judging from the vids so far seen online, Jack-O appears to be mute, or a woman of few words. She does like lollipops, does she? And the camera seems to love her (rather fetching) derriere… Need to see more of this lady, definitely!

Fallout 4 Trailer is LIVE!

War never changes, but trailers sure do.

It’s been a LOOOOONG wait, but it’s finally here. Well, the first trailer is. And judging from how Bethesda Softworks takes their sweet time with their games, this may not be in our hands for a while. But at least, we know it’s a thing. It’s real. It’s coming. Fallout 4. The post-apocalyptic RPG is back, after a very long while. Judging from this initial trailer, you’re probably once again going to take the role of a Vault Dweller, newly-arrived into the harsh outside world to carry out some mission or quest, or to just screw things up royally. I have to admit, I’m more of an Elder Scrolls guy than a Fallout person, but hey- an open world RPG of Bethesda quality is always great, and I will surely be getting into this one. It will certainly be something to get into while I wait for… well, the Elder Scrolls VI.

For now though, check out the trailer and pick apart every precious second. Expect to see more this coming E3!

Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator?! Johnny Returns!

Posted in Arcade, DLC, Fan Service, Fighting Games, Game Advertising, Game-related Events, Gaming, Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator, Guilty Gear Xrd Sign on May 27th, 2015 by thelonegamer

The Leader of the Jellyfish Pirates returns in playable form.

Just in today- Arc System Works announced an arcade upgrade to their popular anime-esque fighter, Guilty Gear Xrd Signs. Entitled Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator, this maybe-sequel will add various things, including balance changes, a new ‘Stylish Mode’ of easy gameplay and, best of all, New Characters!

The first new character is Johnny, the popular captain of the Jellyfish Pirates of whom May is a part of. He did figure quite prominently in the Story Mode, so his absence was kinda odd in the first place. Anyways, I’m sure his fans will be celebrating.

But even more intriguing is a totally new(?) challenger who has so far only been shown via a silhouette of her artwork below. And yes, I assume this new fighter is female, or a very radical redesign of Bridget.

Who is THIS?!

Looking at the profile, she has coiffed hair pretty much like Lili Rochefort’s, but her overall image seems to bring to mind Kula Diamond. Not sure what’s up with her hand- are those straps? Is she wearing a kind of straitjacket? What is that thing floating over her head, some sort of halo?

She lacks the rabbit-ears that would mark her as a Valentine; if she isn’t a redesigned returnee, perhaps she is the revealed behind-the-scenes manipulator in Story Mode…?

Anyways, Revelator will see arcade test runs in Japan this early June. I am hoping for more characters to be added, and a console upgrade release eventually. I love Xrd, so I’ll be keeping an eye on this one.

Mortal Kombat X: Jason Lives!

Ch-ch-ch…hahahah…

Today, May 5, sees the classic horror icon Jason Voorhees unleashed in Mortal Kombat X. Netherrealms released the trailer above some hours ago, and it is spot-on perfect for this psychotic slasher. The new Kombatant has been featured by NR themselves in the latest Kombat Kast, revealing his three variations- Slasher, Relentless and Unstoppable.

Jason’s gameplay revealed!

Even more so than Freddy Kreuger was done in MK9, I think Netherrealm pretty much nailed Jason for the game, down to his walk, his attacks and even the occasional horror music highlights during some of his moves/attacks. If you ‘love’ this maniacal madman, you’ll adore using him to gut into the competition in MKX.
Jason will be available today for owners of the Kombat Pack, but he will be made available as standalone DLC on May 12. Happy Hacking!

Killer Instinct: Hisako is Scary Awesome!

Hisako’s release trailer has both story and gameplay reveals.

Last weekend saw the release of the ‘Ghost Girl’ Hisako in Killer Instinct Season 2. The relatively lengthy spot shows off what appear to be cinematic elements, showing the background of this latest (and so far scariest) fighter to join the KI lineup.

A vengeful spirit, Hisako was a Samurai Lord’s daughter in Feudal Age Japan. When renegade soldiers attacked her village and killed her father, she took up his naginata and fought the raiders, killing many of them. Though she herself died in the process, the villagers erected a shrine in her memory. Hundreds of years later, Hisako is awakened from her eternal repose by the desecration of her grave by an outside organization (three guesses on which organization that is). Now she seeks revenge on those responsible.

Hisako’s trailer is freakin’ awesome- the voice acting (which I assume is also her in-game voice) is pretty much perfect, including the music and mood changing from playful and reminiscing to outright creepy and effed-up raging. The cinematic scenes I think may be scenes from Hisako’s Story Mode, which may give a hint to how awesome the mode will be once it’s finished for Season 2 characters.
So far I’ve been playing Hisako and she’s bloody fun to play, despite having relatively fewer moves to use compared to other fighters. Her design, animation and fighting style just prick the right nerves to make her my total favorite character in the game right now!

Of course, the trailer also teases the next fighter to be released- no other than fan-favorite Cinder. After that, all that is left is the elusive, enigmatic ARIA. I have to admit, Iron Galaxy has done an incredible job of keeping KI alive and slashing since they possessed- er, took over the reigns of the franchise. Can’t wait to see what happens next- for now though, I’ve got me a date with my new undead muse…

Killer Instinct’s Hisako: Giving Grudge Matches a Whole New Meaning…

Hisako is looking scary awesome.

Recently, during Pax 2015, Iron Galaxy debuted the latest addition to the Killer Instinct roster. Known earlier as the ‘Ghost Girl’, this creepy competitor has now been revealed to be named Hisako, and as anyone can see, she looks like she just crawled out of some cursed videotape and then into KI.
Inspired by Japanese Horror films such as The Ring and Ju-on (The Grudge), Hisako is certainly the most unconventional female fighter to come a long in like, forever. Well, arguably the slot of grotesque female in a fighting game is also shared by the ferocious Mileena from Mortal Kombat, but heck… Hisako’s design, animation and execution is brilliant.

I certainly am more intrigued at this character than I was for the lumbering Man-Mountain Aganos. Hisako is scheduled to be unleashed on the Xbox One sometime before the end of March. I’m just hoping she stays on the other side of the screen…

DOA5 Last Round’s New Fighter Revealed (Updated with Trailers)

Introducing… Honoka!

A couple of days before her trailer will reportedly debut, Dead or Alive 5′s latest (and last?) new character has been revealed. Her name is Honoka, a schoolgirl apparently possessing some ‘secret power’. Little is known so far about her since only a rather low-res Famitsu scan and the screenshot above have been found online. So far, all we know is that she has pink hair and apparently has the biggest breast size of all the female fighters(!).
She seems to know or has some relationship with fellow newcomer Marie Rose, since they seem to have a special tag team intro (and they even kind of resemble one another). Her fighting style is named Honoka-Ryu, which probably is self-taught or self-made. So what’s the story with the pirate glove? Is she an actual martial artist or a ‘magical girl’ combatant? IS SHE ACTUALLY LUCKY CHLOE IN DISGUISE???

Well, the trailer for her debut should answer some of these questions, sometime tomorrow (the 15th). We’ll see then.

Honoka’s Reveal Trailer arrives.

Okay, I have to say I am honestly, legitimately disappointed with this newcomer. At least Marie Rose had her own unique moves and fighting style, but Honoka’s moves (judging by the trailer) are a mish-mash of borrowed stuff from various fighters- Hitomi, Jann-Lee, Zack, Helena, Kokoro- even perhaps something from the big man grapplers (and a thin girl doing a crushing bearhug just looks odd). The thing that sets her apart is her apparently ‘magical’ glove, which we will probably find out about as the game arrives. Aside from her rehashed moves though, I am also not liking her token timid and perky, saccharine-cute schoolgirl character. Hell, since I’m not really a boobs guy not even her huge boobs are a big plus for me. Oh well.

The Japanese version of Honoka’s trailer.

Okay, strangely enough, I am not as annoyed as I was with Honoka watching the Japanese trailer. Perhaps it was due tro her english voice that made me dislike her the first time. However, I still don’t relish the idea of another character who copies moves from other fighters. This is in her story, making her kinda like a female, kid version of Raidou- which leads me to suspect perhaps she’s related to him in some way. Anyhoo, that’s that. Next up is the February release of DOA5LR, which I eagerly anticipate.

Dead or Alive 5: Last Round Teaser Vids

Fight vids like this show off new bits like outfits and hairstyles.

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round is still headed for a February release on pretty much every platform save portables. Team Ninja has been a bit sparing in their release of video for their upscaled sequel, but thankfully they have said that they will be releasing more video to show off their game. So far we’ve seen short matches which usually show off some new costumes for the characters, and every little bit just makes me want this even more. I dunno- basically it’s the same game as DOA5U, but with two new additions to the roster (Mecha-Raidou and the so-far unrevealed female) and upscaling to 1080p resolution (for PS4 and XB1), but I am kinda getting the feeling that there will be little nice bits and bobs of new things to see.

Anyways, the game will also be available on Steam (already preordered!), so PC players will also be getting DOA awesomeness this Valentine’s month. Whoopie!

Preorder swimsuit DLC and offers are plenty online.

Skyrim Let’s Play: SorcererDave Plays Dragonborn

SorcererDave’s I, Claudius Skyrim LP continues!

I have been doing my Skyrim Let’s Play ‘thing’ for several months now, and I have to say it’s a blast to be able to tell stories while playing a darn game that I enjoy, and be it a passing fancy or eventually a longtime endeavor that I pursue, I credit a couple of people for getting me into it- the two Skyrim LP-ers who have had the most influence on me. One is Gopher- yep, the almighty wonderful Gophernator, whose own longtime LP ended recently (though he may return to Tamriel from time to time). The other is SorcererDave formerly Jingles1218.

Of all the LPers I have the pleasure of watching and following on Youtube, Dave is perhaps among the most well-known, and his series- I, Claudius- which follows the saga of a decidedly unlikable hero in the form of his titular Imperial Legion Soldier, is now on its Fifth Season/Chapter. Previously, Dave had gone on somewhat of an indefinite leave from playing Skyrim, with little information on when he would continue. Well, thankfully he has finally come back to the game, and it seems that he is enjoying himself, as well as playing a specific DLC of the game (Dragonborn) which he actually hasn’t played yet at all. Which should lead to loads of fun for both him and viewer.

What makes Dave’s LP exceptional for me is the way he tells his story- aside from his goddamn awesome voice (Englishmen have it so damn good, dammit), the craft of how he edits and frames his videos and his adventures onscreen are just second to none. I especially love the way he handles the music, and this chapter in particular- the way he starts off his episode- the narration, the writing, and DAMN the music with the titles… it is art. The way he commentates is a cross between roleplay and real world commentary, which is something I guess I can never really do, so its always something for me to learn from. Anyway, I do think that even after four solid chapters, Claudius has a LOT more adventuring to do in Skyrim, and I am hoping this series continues onward in the many months to come.

For now, I got me a new Claudius episode to enjoy so I’m clam-happy. Heheh.
