Ch-ch-ch…hahahah…

Today, May 5, sees the classic horror icon Jason Voorhees unleashed in Mortal Kombat X. Netherrealms released the trailer above some hours ago, and it is spot-on perfect for this psychotic slasher. The new Kombatant has been featured by NR themselves in the latest Kombat Kast, revealing his three variations- Slasher, Relentless and Unstoppable.

Jason’s gameplay revealed!

Even more so than Freddy Kreuger was done in MK9, I think Netherrealm pretty much nailed Jason for the game, down to his walk, his attacks and even the occasional horror music highlights during some of his moves/attacks. If you ‘love’ this maniacal madman, you’ll adore using him to gut into the competition in MKX.
Jason will be available today for owners of the Kombat Pack, but he will be made available as standalone DLC on May 12. Happy Hacking!

Mortal Kombat X Launch Trailer

It has begun. Well, in about a week.

Netherrealms just recently posted the launch trailer to their just-around-the-corner sequel, Mortal Kombat X, and it is looking EPIC. The spot shows off scenes from the sure-to-be-awesome Story Mode as well as tons of in-game action, most of which looks just as good as the cinematics. This is truly a nextgen-looking fighter, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. Just little more than a week left of waiting. Heck, you can probably spoil yourself rotten on info and cinemas right now. Anyways, check out the trailer above if you haven’t already.

Mortal Kombat X: Erron Black Debut Trailer!

John Marsten is reborn in Outworld…

A Stranger Appears! Netherealm finally revealed the badass Cowboy Gunslinger Mercenary Erron Black in their latest Kombat Kast, the hour-long episode also revealing returning characters Lui Kang and Shinnok. But of course it’s Black who gets his own personal trailer. I have to admit, I LOVE the gunplay, the sounds of his six-shooters and overall feel, without it becoming too gun-kata. I wish they could give this guy a Revolver Ocelot skin. Or maybe even Billy Lee Black from Xenogears (any relation, I wonder..?). This guy obviously has a story and a big part in the plot… he’s being painted as a guy who is playing both sides, but with still a bit of a good guy leaning. Hoping they don’t kill him off anytime soon- he’s freakin’ awesome.

Netherrealm goes through Erron’s Good, Bad and Ugly Variants…

Mortal Kombat X is looking X-cellent!

One hour of Kombat Awesomeness.

As a fighting game fan, I’ve always been more of the bloodless, realistic and graceful martial arts enthusiast type- which explains why my absolute favorite fighting games are Virtua Fighter and Tekken (yes, I know Tekken straddles the line between real and fantasy). But still, Mortal Kombat is a guilty pleasure of mine. I’ve always kept an eye on the series since the original in the arcade. Even if the quality of the gameplay has varied wildly (the first 3D MKs were especially clunky), one thing that has kept me interested was the story- the characters, the saga and the mythos behind all the blood and the entrails. The GUTS of the saga, if you will. But with 2011′s Mortal Kombat re-boot/remake, the series finally approached the greatness of the best fighting games in terms of gameplay, fighting action and animations, while also upping the ante in terms of Beat ‘Em Up Storytelling.

A couple of years later, Mortal Kombat X looks to even leap further onward, with the fighting action looking every bit as fluid, brutally graceful and violently gorgeous as any of the competition. I can honestly say that I am really wanting to play MKX as much as watch the inevitably epic and cheezy Story mode so much.
I applaud Ed Boon and Netherrealm‘s rather daring steps to go with a roster that is populated both with returning favorites (Johnny Cage and Sonya, looking good even after 25 years) and all-new Kombatants. It’s testament to pretty slick design that characters like the still not completely revealed Erron Black, a cowboy ninja gunslinger, already has a large number of fans. The redesign of veterans like Mileena- my main, actually- is pretty amazing and I am gobsmacked impressed by the quality of this game in terms of look and style.

All this plus the game is looking more loaded with content, modes and stuff to do like the old beat ‘em ups of old. The Faction War mode looks fun as heck, and the Kombat Towers, the wild guest characters and the tantalizing promise of more returning faves just makes the MK blood in me race. In just a few more weeks, we may just see one of the biggest fighting games this year on our HD consoles, and I can’t be happier. Damn, this is going to be bloody awesome.

Mortal Kombat X’s Story Trailer Kicks ASS!

Netherrealms continues to show everyone how to do the Story Mode…

When the previous Mortal Kombat (MK9) came out a few years ago, it came with something pretty revolutionary- a Story Mode that was actually EPIC. Long but engrossing to watch and having the right balance of watching and playing, MK9 pretty much set the standard that every fighting game would probably need to try and top from there on in. Well, NR raises the bar yet again with the sequel. Just the trailer is pretty much blockbuster movie quality, promising a quite impressively scaled saga starring both returning favorites in the franchise and the new blood descendants and all-new additions to MK’s ever-growing lore. I am really stoked to see what happened at the end of the previous game coming into MKX, how and why previously-deceased fighters like Kitana and Kung Lao are back, and from where the series goes from here. Damn, Ed Boon and company have their act together and then some. I want this movie- er, game, NOW.

Mortal Kombat X Character Reveals!

‘Snake’ returns to MK.

This week has been pretty exciting for fans of the Mortal Kombat series, with not one but two character revealed via streams and new trailers. The first new fighter is Reptile, MK’s original secret fighter whose latest incarnation has him more lizard-like and beastly than ever before, sporting an even more inhuman look and bony armor. He’s still got his trademark tricks like the acid spit and the force ball, and he’s not afraid to use them.

We are Legion! Ermac is back.

The second character revealed (and just today!) is Ermac. A collection of souls given physical form, this telekinetic ninja was first seen as intriguing new concept art some time ago (which might show up as his alternate looks) but now has been fully shown off. A lot of gamers called it that Ermac would be the second reveal, and they called it right.

Bits of the new narrative may be culled from this video.

Maximillian on Youtube also posted a vid above showing off the new intros and fatalities, the former giving hints on the ongoing story. So far, we know that the new MK is set 20++ years after the end of the last tournament’s story. The new fighter and conqueror, Kotal Khan, has taken Outworld’s throne, upon which he is/was opposed by Mileena (still unrevealed as a playable or not). Several characters who died in the previous game- such as Kung Lao and Kitana- have returned, though it is still unknown how they escaped from being Quan-chi‘s thralls. It’s all very intriguing, which may lead to yet another awesome story mode in the upcoming MKX. Can’t wait! Mortal Kombat X is set for release this coming April.

Mortal Kombat X E3 Stage Demo, New Characters!

Mortal Kombat shows off some of the goods to come.

Ed Boon showed off his latest baby on stage at E3, revealing a ton of tidbits for this spectacular-looking gorefest. Mortal Kombat X will feature a bunch of all-new characters, some of which made their debut on the previously-seen trailer. The so-far shown newcomers include D’Vorah (‘Ladybug’), a half-human/half-insect female combatant, Ferra and Torr are the Master-Blaster combo character and Kotal Khan is the male fighter shown squeezing blood into his face from a crushed heart (Eew).

But there’s MORE! The vid above also gives a first look (character portrait only) at Cassie Cage- yep, the daughter of vets Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade (yep, they hook up some time after the previous tournament). Cassie will fight using a combination of both her parents’ styles.
Some other bits from the game- each character will have 3 Variations which will effectively be very different versions of the character, each with exclusive moves or weapons. This may pretty much triple the roster in a way- awesome.
The story of MKX is set up to 25 years after the first game (the story may happen in stages throughout that time lapse), allowing for both older and newer characters to appear. This still doesn’t answer whether we’ll see any of the fighters killed off in the last game though… Lastly, the game’s Final Boss will be a returning character, though it may be a ‘surprise’.

Man, Mortal Kombat X is looking darn intriguing and awesome. The graphics look amazing, the fighting looks solid, the character designs are wild, and I can’t wait to see more of this one. Sadly we still have to wait a while- the game is set for release in 2015 on pretty much every console. Color me excited. Hit me with your best shot, Nether Realm! I want your game now.

Cassie Cage makes her debut in this demo video.

UPDATE: Added in IGN’s Stage Demo vid from Day 2. This new vid shows off action with new characters Cassie Cage and Kotal Khan, along with their pretty cool new fatalities. I have to say I am loving the fatality/victory screen layout, with the victor standing in the background, the loser’s body in the fore. Really nice. They really are impressing me with this one.
