Action and drama unfolds as the crossover commences!

Capcom’s Streetfighter X Tekken is less than a week and a half away! To be honest, I wasn’t that hot for the game until recently, when I re-reviewed all the trailers and vids, and have lately been inundated with views of the gameplay and variety of characters. Obviously the game’s more free-form, combo and chain-heavy action looks fun as hell- fast and crazy but still nowhere near as spastic and mash-crazy as Marvel vs Capcom 3 (which I really don’t like). But the biggest pay-off for me is the stories of the battles between the two fighting game worlds, and the individual plotlines revealed so far between the many, many team-ups.
I assume the story will unfold via the game’s main Arcade Mode, starting with a Team Prologue (with artworks), with at least one cutscene with in-game graphics between the team and a rival duo. As for the endings, will they be real-time as well? Nope, apparently we can look forward to CG pre-rendered epilogues for the various teams, as tweeted by Yohinori Ono. When a fan asked ‘Are the endings in SFxTK cinematic like the trailers?’, the SF producer replied ‘Yes, ending is like trailer.’

This is cool news for me- I really enjoyed the CG story episodes for SFxTK; I wanna see them wrap up the various plots in spectacular fashion, to match the build-up. I hope they don’t hold back and show definite winners and losers in the various rivalries being setup in the get-go. It’s really been a long time since I’ve seen satisfying good ol’ fashioned fighting game Arcade Mode CG endings, and SFxTK just may deliver that sort of campy but unforgettable bits of sexy CG that’ll have gamers talking and discussing about which one is their fave and which ones fail for years.

Streetfighter X Tekken is out March 8 for PS3 and Xbox360, and eventually on PS Vita. More as we get it then!

Infamous’ Cole… Blanka’s long-lost brother?

I’ve been watching awesome videos from the currently ongoing E3 2011 all morning, but THIS is something I need to post here. Sony’s upcoming handheld, the now-officially-named Playstation Vita (Vee-ta) or PS Vita, will be getting a whopper of a portable fighter- nothing less than Streetfighter X Tekken. And that’s not all- a certain electrically-charged superhero/supervillain will be making a guest appearance. Yep, Cole from Infamous will be making both World Warriors and Iron Fist Fighters jump in shock. This is, of course, a Sony exclusive, and will be in both the PS Vita and PS3 versions of the game. Man, just the idea of SF x Tekken on a handheld- man, I’m sold. All I need is a Tekken Tag Tournament 2 announce and Sony’s got my soul with the Vita. Anyways, for now info on the portable version of this crossover fighter are TBA. Ono’s gonna be trolling like crazy, I can tell. Awesome!

PSP2 AKA "Next Generation Portable" Unveiled in Japan

NGP?? Neo Geo Pocket? Ninja Gaiden Perfect? Not Gonna Pan (Out)?

Right at this very moment, Sony is holding it’s Playstation 2011 Meeting in Tokyo, and presenting to the world it’s new portable gaming device- referred to right now simply as the Next Generation Portable (and not the PSP2, as many have been calling it). Well, it still certainly looks like the PSP, or at least, the PSP Go. But the similarities are only skin-deep, as supposedly this new portable is as powerful as a PS3. WHAAAT? When I read that, my mind began running images of an pixel-and-framerate-perfect, feature-complete Tekken 6, in my hands, on a taxi, coming home from work. Is that possible?

Anyway, this new toy comes with rear panel touch controls, rear cameras, gyroscope/accelerometer, dual analog sticks, a 5-inch OLED screen, built-in 3G and more. The NGP’s community will congregate through the game’s new interface/portal, called LiveArea, where you will be able to chat with friends live. Sony franchise games such as Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone and Little Big Planet are confirmed to be coming to the NGP. It’s not known yet if these titles will be PS3 ports, or all-new versions of these games. It’s also known that digital downloads of existing PSP games will also be compatible with the NGP- backwards compatibility ROCKS!

What about third-party games? The list of supporting third parties for NGP includes Q Entertainment, Ubi Soft, Rockstar Games, Activision, Capcom, Konami, Namco-Bandai, Sega, Square Enix, Level 5 and so on. At this point anything can happen, but at the very least, the event had Hideo Kojima show off a cutscene from Metal Gear Solid 4 playing on the NGP. MGS Next on the NGP? Who knows. We should be finding out more soon as the new device is set for release in Japan by the 2011 Holidays. Looks like Sony’s set to take on the 3DS head-on.

Check out images and spec info for the NGP/PSP2 over at Engadget.
