Tekken 6 Character Countdown Part 30: Mokujin


Mokujin. Not a Fighter for Dummies.

As a way of counting down the time to the release of Tekken 6 for the PS3 and Xbox360, I’ve decided to begin this weekly series of lengthy, character-specific articles, each one featuring one of the 40 or so competing warriors in the latest and greatest King of Iron Fist Tournament. Hopefully, by the time we finish and reach character number 40, we’ll have the console version of Tekken in our hands already.

Number 30! We’re three quarters of the way to finishing off the standing roster of Tekken 6 playable fighters. Will we have our Tekken 6 console version by the end of this? We’ll see. Still a ways to go, but time moves fast, people.

The fighter in the spotlight is yet again, another one of the lineup’s oddballs, and a fine example of the Tekken developers’ wacky sense of humor and weird imagination. Another non-human participant in the King of Iron Fist Tournament, this individual is the oldest being to join the fray, even making old Heihachi or even ancient Wang look like teenagers. He/She/It is the game’s master of mimicry, the Wooden Wonder, Mokujin.

Distinguishing Features: He’s a walking, wooden training dummy.

Strengths: Hard-headed. Hard-bodied. Okay, he’s about as strong as the fighter’s skill he takes on, so this value varies.

Weaknesses: Woodpeckers and termites. Bark worse than his… Hmm. Anyway, again, Mokujin takes the weaknesses of the fighter he mimics in any particular round.

Affiliation: No known or direct affiliations save for his interactions with other non-human characters such as Roger Jr., but is generally known to be benign and good-aligned. This places him squarely against Jin Kazama and the Mishima Zaibatsu.

Background: A wooden training dummy carved from a 2,000-year old tree, Mokujin has, since Tekken 3, appeared in the Tekken Tournaments, coming to life whenever a great evil or threat to the world emerges, seeking to aid those fighting against these grave dangers.

As the King of Iron Fist Tournament 6 is announced, evil forces are gathering as Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima prepare to meet in battle. Once again, Mokujin is animated and fighting for good in the upcoming battle…

Character Analysis: Mokujin is, simply put, a character I almost never pick- perhaps once or twice in the consoles to check out his story. But in arcades? Never. You only pick this Mimic to show off your singular prowess and knowledge of every fighter in the roster… either that or you just didn’t know any better, or he was chosen at random. Using a fighter who changes styles every round is obviously not for Tekken 6 dummies.

As for his story, the idea of a wooden dummy animated by the powers of good is pretty cool… although wild like nothing else, even in a world where bears and kangaroos fighting alongside humans against demonic entities is a common sight. Unfortunately Mokujin’s storyline has never been really too serious, mostly played up for comic relief. At best, he may be seen as a character who engages ‘good’ fighters to train them for the coming battle with the real baddies. At worst, you may wonder if he actually exists in the canon storyline at all.

Still that doesn’t mean that Mokujin doesn’t have he/she/it’s charms. Seeing Mokujin reminds me of an old Jackie Chan movie entitled the Shaolin Wooden Men. I wonder if the devs watched this a bit too much back when they were putting together Tekken 3? Heheh…

What lies in the future for Tekken’s Wooden Fighter? Mokujin’s been around for a long time in Tekken, and unlike Combot or Unknown, he’ll probably be around for as long as the series continues. Perhaps for another 2,000 years..?
